Root Goal - How to Define it

To define the root goal is tricky, but I generally say the root goal is to transmit your genes to future generations.

Tricky points about the definition of the root goal:

  1. Survival, but not individual survival. Species survival.

  2. How to define a species? A species adapts through time.

  3. Gene transmission - not just to the next generation, but to every future generation. Open-ended survival.

  4. Genes, but which genes?

  5. Pleasure, usually coupled to gene transmission, but sometimes hijacked artificially.

  6. Since the root goal is open-ended, it's an infinite regression and therefore can't really provide a "meaning of life."
